5, 2001 Sue's rockin' blues She may not fit the stereotype, but Sue Foley is a bona fide blues artist. At 32, the Canadian guitarist is a veteran of the road, having performed in clubs all over North America since her late teens, sharing stages with the likes of Otis Rush, Albert Collins and Buddy Guy. Meanwhile, her gritty guitar and sultry vocals have landed her recording deals with such prestigious U.S. blues labels as Antone's and Shanachie. Four years ago, after a seven-year stint living in Austin, Tex., Foley moved back to her home town of Ottawa to give birth to a son, Joe. Now, with the success of her sixth album, the Juno-nominated Love Comin' Down, the road beckons again. Last month, Foley opened for B. B. King and will be performing in weeks ahead with John Lee Hooker, Johnny Winter and the Neville Brothers. "I'll go wherever the blues takes me," says Foley. "It's been my calling, my living and my lifestyle for a long time now." © 2001 Maclean's |
